How to calculate freight density
For measurements in inches, multiply length × width × height, then divide by 1,728 to get cubic feet. Divide gross weight in pounds by those cubic feet to get pounds per cubic foot (PCF).
48 × 40 × 48 ÷ 1,728 = 53⅓ ft³
640 ÷ 53⅓ = 12 lb/ft³
Two identical pallets double the volume and weight, so their density stays at 12 lb/ft³. For different sizes, this calculator adds each row’s volume and weight before calculating the combined density.
Measure the shipment as it will travel
Use the greatest outer dimensions, including packaging and protrusions. Include the pallet or crate in the weight. Enter a separate row whenever dimensions or weight differ. A row’s weight is for one unit, not the whole row.
Does density give me the freight class?
Only when the applicable NMFC item assigns class using that density scale. Handling, stowability, liability, and item-specific provisions can change the classification. A combined density does not establish one class for a shipment of mixed commodities.
NMFTA publishes the standard 13-band density reference. Its classification guidance explains why the correct NMFC item still matters. Check that item in ClassIT+ or confirm it with your carrier before booking.
What if the rounded number sits on a boundary?
Keep the full measurements. A density of 11.9999 PCF may display as 12.00 in the summary, but it is still below 12. The conditional class uses the full density, allowing only for minute conversion differences. Recheck your measurements if a small change would cross a band.
